OUTLINE of the course on Organic Petrology
The course is centred on the petrology of coals with a particular emphasis on their petrography. Practical applications and technological importance will be stressed.

1. Opening

2. The history of organic petrology including the concept of coal rank and type (ACC)
3. The petrographic microscope (ACC)
4. Sample preparation and petrographic techniques - point counting (ACC)
5. Macerals, microlithotypes and lithotypes (ACC)
6. Reflectance and fluorescence including standards (ACC)
7. Practical session and discussion of petrographic techniques, e.g. point counting, reflectance, fluorescence (ACC & CFKD)
8. Coalification, its causes and effects (CFKD)
9. Coal classification (ACC) 
10. Interpretation of petrographic results and their application to exploration (trend surfaces, iso-rank maps etc., beneficiation and coal preparation (ACC)
11. Practical session and discussion of petrographic techniques, e.g. point counting, reflectance, fluorescence (ACC & CFKD)
12. The application of organic petrology to oil and gas exploration (ACC)
13. Char petrology (combustion, gasification, hydrogenation) (CFKD)
14. Carbonisation and coke petrology (CFKD)
15. Practical session and discussion of petrographic techniques, e.g. point counting, reflectance, fluorescence (ACC & CFKD)
16. Coal-depositional environments (CFKD)
