This commission is involved in the application of petrology to coal utilisation and mining. A major emphasis has been in relating the petrographic composition of coals to characteristics of metallurgical coke. However, other projects have involved the classification of liquefaction and combustion residues, reactive inertinite and the development of fully automated microscope systems for characterising coals.
